Successful conference points to the way ahead for forestry industry

The industry conference events “Forest Futures – Innovation | Jobs | Investment”, which took place on 24-25 November 2009, was attended by more than 300 industry leaders and decision makers, senior Government Ministers, Senators and Members of Parliament from Labor and the Coalition to examine the future opportunities of the industry in Australia. FPI05 Case for Endorsement

The continuous improvement of the Forest and Forest Products Training Package is progressing with several areas prioritised for inclusion in the Case for Endorsement to be submitted to the National Quality Council (NQC) early in 2010.  Some priority areas are -   review of 6 chainsaw units, Skill Set for Log Truck Drivers, Skill Set for Fire Salvage Operations, new qualifications and pathways for the Truss and Frame Sector and Skill Sets for Timber Drying.

ForestWorks supports participants in Diploma of Forest and Forest Products

ForestWorks supported a productivity places submission which will enable participants to undertake the Diploma of Forest and Forest Products. The diploma will equip them with skills and knowledge for future opportunities with Forestry Tasmania. The participants will commence their Diploma with the Tasmanian Skills Institute through the Productivity Places Program on the 8-9 December 2009. The initial stage of the program will focus on continuous improvement, customer service management and personal work priorities and development.

Tree Felling Manual Review

ForestWorks, industry associations, RTOs and TAFE tree falling technical advisors, met at ForestWorks in Melbourne recently to discuss continued work on the Tree Felling Manual. The next edition of the manual will be closer aligned to the Units of Competency in the Forest and Forest Products Industry Training Package (FPI05). Contact Us!

Certificate IV TAA participants continue through PPP

ForestWorks Tasmania continues to mentor, assess and train participants undertaking a Certificate IV Training and Assessment with Willson Training (an RTO). The joint submission through the Productivity Places Program has allowed for 12 forest industry trainers and assessors to attain the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. A greater number of experienced assessors in the industry will ensure higher standards in training and assessment.

Stimulating Training Demand in Victoria

ForestWorks Victoria recently launched a project to increase the number of trainees in higher qualifications. The project identified a skills shortage in these qualifications after extensive consultation with industry. In order to meet this demand, this ForestWorks led project is looking at promoting training pathways into Certificate IV Forest Operations and the Diploma Forest and Forest products qualifications. This project will encourage more employees to take up these qualifications to order to fill the gap left by a shortage of graduate Foresters. Learn More!

Tasmanian workers assisted into new training and career pathways

Workers made redundant in the North East and North West of Tasmania are retraining and moving into new careers through the Structural Adjustment PPP (SAPPP). ForestWorks, working closely with the workers, the union and FIETS have found alternative employment for employees affected by the recent mill closures - a significant result for the region.
